LÊ ĐÌNH CAI * HỒI KÝ HỶ KHƯƠNG

Reading "A memoir on my Dad:
Poet Ung Binh Thuc Gia Thi" written
by Ton Nu Hy Khuong
Prof. Le Dinh Cai

People in Hue are very familiar with a kind of traditional poetic songs/verses (Hue characters) written by Ung Binh Thuc Gia Thi - a poet and also a high ranking official of the Nguyen feudal Court (the Nguyen Dynasty was the last dynasty in Vietnam).
Ton Nu Hy Khuong - Ung Binh's daughter and also a writer - worked on Ung Binh's poems and other forms of arts, such as play. His modern play called "Lo Dich" (originated from "Le Cid" authored by P. Corneille) was extensively performed in Central and Southern Vietnam in the late 1930s.
Ton Nu Hy Khuong's memoir on her Dad (Ung Binh Thuc Gia Thi) recorded dozens of stories on her father's life which was simple and, in many times, contrary to his position as a high ranking official in an extremely conservative feudal system. While other high ranking officials were corruptive and cruel; he was a good man willing to help the people.
Prof. Le Dinh Cai, who taught in the 1970s in Hue (Faculty of Pedagogy), discovered that Ton Nu Hy Khuong's works are helpful for scholars/students to obtain accurate documents on her father's poems and arts, and his life. Graduate students who would like to do research on Vietnamese arts - especially on Hue's poems and arts -, should refer to Ung Binh's books.
